First official Flash 8 work

Well, it has begun. Apparently, we don’t even need the good news that Flash Player 8 adoption has been faster than all other versions: just a mention of some of the new features (specially related to video and the new express install) was enough to convince the client that Flash 8 was the better option. […]

Final draw for the World Cup groups

It’s today! The final draw for the Germany World Cup 2006 groups will be held on Leipzig, Germany, at 20:15 CET – 32 teams will be distributed between 8 groups with 4 national teams each (from each group, 2 teams will be qualified for the final rounds). What’s cool about this is that FIFA has […]

Be like Van Gogh, but with your ear on

On the days of Flash 7 (and less), one of the biggest problems I had to deal with was handling a lot of objects on screen, at the same time. This was particularly true with painting pseudo-applications – you know, cutesy websites where you could create drawings within Flash. The problem with sites like that […]

W3C to create RIA standards using a lot of acronyms

Among other things, the W3C is now looking to develop new standards for rich user interface applications. To quote, The W3C Web Application Formats Working Group is chartered to develop languages for client-side Web Application development. (…) This deliverable should be based on an existing application/UI format, such as Mozilla’s XUL, Microsoft’s XAML, Macromedia’s MXML […]

Macromedia launches a bunch of stuff online, head explodes

There’s the ActionScript 3 section at Macromedia Labs. The AS2 to AS3 migration sheet is particularly interesting. You can also download the new tools for testing – including Flash Player 8.5, the one with the new virtual machine. Mike Chambers has some more information about all this.

Raycasting in Flash 8

Using what’s he’s calling the Flash Ray Engine, Glen Rhodes ported a version of id Software’s game Wolfenstein 3d to Flash 8. It’s working pretty nice, and is a great glimpse of what’s ahead on the future of Flash 8 games. Raycasting engines had been ported before to Flash 7, but they were too slow; […]

Top 3 Flash 8 features, according to me

Right now, everybody and their mother are talking about Flash 8. I’ll just add a bit more echo to the choir and speak about I think are the coolest features about this new version. 3. Improved readability. With the new font rendering algorithm, Flash will finally get rid of the blurred mess of vector art […]

Flash 8 officially announced, sort of released

So 8/8 has finally come, and Macromedia has officially announced the new version of Flash. Surprisingly, the new IDE isn’t called Flash MX 2005 – my personal bet – nor Flash MX 2, but actually Flash 8. To tell the truth, I thank Macromedia for this decision; product branding and all that is very important, […]
